Angewandte Gesellschaftskunst

Kunst als Alibi – damit ist eine Strategie des polnischen Videokünstlers Artur Żmijewski benannt. In seinen Arbeiten rehabilitiert Żmijewski die Idee der Wirkung von Kunst auf die Gesellschaft als Konzept autonomer Kunstproduktion. Dabei verzichtet er radikal auf eine Ästhetisierung der Wirklichkeit. Kunst ist für ihn vielmehr ein »Werkzeug«, ein »Mechanismus« und manchmal auch nur das »Alibi«, um politisch in die Welt eingreifen zu können. Er arbeitet mit MuseumsdirektorInnen, mit Frauen im Gefängnis, mit KünstlerInnen, AktivistInnen und PolitikerInnen.
Der vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewählte Essays, Gespräche und Bilder ­Żmijewskis, die die Idee der künstlerischen Praxis, die er selbst auch »Angewandte Gesellschaftskunst« nennt, vorstellen und diskutieren.

is an art historian and the research coordinator of the Centre for Arts and Cultural Theory (ZKK) at the University of Zurich. Research interests: Russian art, art and power/law/society.

Fabienne Liptay

is a professor of film studies at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She studied film and theater studies as well as English language and literature at the University of Mainz, Germany, where she earned her doctorate in 2002. From 1999 to 2001, she worked as an assistant editor on the TV program 3sat Kulturzeit. She was a lecturer in the Department of Film Studies at the University of Mainz from 2002 to 2007 and assistant professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Munich from 2007 to 2013. She is coeditor of the quarterly journal Film-Konzepte and has published extensively on the aesthetics, history, and theory of film. Her research primarily focuses on film imagery and picture theory; on audio-visual narrative; and on the interrelations between film and the other arts and media.

Dorota Sajewska

Dorota Sajewska

is assistant professor of interart (Eastern Europe) at the University of Zurich and at the Institute of Polish Culture (section for theatre and performance), University of Warsaw. She studied Polish and German philology at the Warsaw University and modern German literature, theatre studies and cultural communication at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2008–2012 she was deputy artistic director of the Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw. Her scientific interests oscillate between culture studies, historiography and anthropology, theatre, performance and contemporary art. Sajewska explores performativity of the body and materiality of objects, as well as interrelations between theatre, politics and media. She also specializes in theories of archiving, particularly concerning documentation of theatre and performance. She is an author of various publications on theatre and performance, theatre scripts and three monographs.

Artur Zmijewski

is a visual artist, photographer and filmmaker. From 1990–1995 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw at the sculpture department guided by the Polish avant-garde artist Prof. Grzegorz Kowalski. Żmijewski is one of the most prominent radical figures on the Polish art scene.
