studied Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Egyptology at the University of Zurich. He completed his doctoral thesis in philosophy in collaboration with Michael Pfister on the subject of Sade, Hegel, and La Mettrie. He made a name for himself with a new translation of Sade’s main works Justine and Juliette, also in collaboration with Michael Pfister. In addition he made a leading contribution to exhibitions on Dadaism and surrealism. Until 2004 he edited the trilingual cultural magazine Gazzetta. He writes contributions for publications such as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and the magazine »du« and translates works – amongst others by Rousseau and Roussel – from French into German. Since April 2007 he has been a member of the programme Literaturclub on Swiss television and since autumn 2012 its moderator.
